NOSTRUM [n.] : a medicine, especially one considered not effective, prepared by an unqualified person.
SHRUB [n.] : a tart syrup for cocktails and sodas; made with local fruits and herbs, organic apple cider vinegar, and organic cane sugar.
The word "shrub" is derived from an Arabic word for "drink." Shrubs have been enjoyed in the Middle East for thousands of years, and in the New World since the colonial era. They fell out of style with the advent of refrigeration, but are making a comeback in the modern craft beverage movement.
WHAT IT IS.
Nostrum shrubs are fruity, herbaceous, sweet, and tart. Used in small amounts [1oz or less], they provide a depth of flavor and color unlike any other commercial syrup or mixer. They are a delicious substitute for syrups in cocktails and sodas. They also make killer salad dressings and culinary sauces. Naturally preserved with organic apple cider vinegar, they allow you to cut corners without cutting quality.
HOW WE DO IT.
We make our shrubs with the highest quality produce, herbs, and spices we can find. That means local whenever possible. And organic whenever available. Thanks to San Diego's mild climate and amazing selection of farms, we're able to produce them year round.
We cold press and slow macerate our shrubs to achieve the subtle and intricate flavors of every ingredient. Our process is unique, but by no means revolutionary. Humans have been making shrubs for thousands of years. We're just doing it in style.
